Crucify evil spirit of gluttony - Knife to your throat!

Knife to your throat!

Proverbs 23:2 ‘And put a knife to your throat If you are a man given to appetite.’

I wish many servants of God would get a chance to read this message!  This would get posted in the ‘SERMONS’ folder of our website as well.  This chapter in the book of Proverbs opens with a warning: ‘When you sit down to eat with a ruler, Consider carefully what is before you!’ Now, let me expound this scripture to you, here God not only speaks about food but also we get a warning to be away from opulence and luxury.  Think of the plethora of TV programs/channels we have on food and the array of juicy, mouth-watering recipes that we see on programs, not to mention of the competitions and live shows that are held on food. You may wonder, ’hey, what’s wrong with food Bala?’  Lot of sins and temptations start with food, do you know that?  Dating starts with coffee in the Coffee shop and ends with dinner after a few days! Beware!

I know of a 45 year old, well qualified man, working with one of the Multination National Company, with two kids who spent his lunch time at office with a young unmarried woman.  He would share his mutton curry – prepared for him by his wife – with the girl and what started in the office canteen slowly moved to the luxury resort in the outskirts of the city and finally within a very short span of two years, he committed suicide in the same resort with his girl friend’s scarf, while she slept in the same room with him.  Beware!

Look at the hole in many of your pockets and wallets because you have been ravenously spending on food! Many are rich– but they gorged on food and got themselves into debts.  I know many who lavishly slug their credit cards after an expensive dinner, only to hold their breath when they receive the monthly statement!  Birthdays/anniversaries can also be celebrated at home; cooking and having fun together.  Women folks, besides lessons on beauty tips, you’ve got to know how to cook excellent meals as well!  Many men stray away for want of good home food, be warned today!   Pause and think today! I know it is tough to avoid the glittering display, with our cities awash with colorful food outlets and fast food joints, but I’m sure today’s devotion is going to deliver many of you from this bondage of food. We must never forget ‘food’ and ‘lust for food’ had been the cause for the first sin in this world that was committed by Adam and Eve.  Let us never repeat it!

After my preaching in an all-night service, one young man came to the pastor of that church the next morning and said, ‘Pastor, I apologized to my mother last night for unnecessarily spending on ‘fast-food’ and I had made a resolution to eat only home food.’   We need to have control of our tongue! Christians are followers of Jesus Christ, and we have to follow His footsteps in the area of praying and fasting as well.

Many of the servants of God have lost the anointing and are not able to delve deep into the Word, because they have given themselves to much food.  Friends, many spiritual ‘get-togethers’ have lost the effect because much time is spent on food- either on preparation or consumption.  Instead of having fasting-revivals, we have briyani-revivals in our churches, anybody listening?  Tell the congregation, ‘you would get one briyani packet free if you attend today’s prayer meeting’, I bet 99% of the church would show up.  Such is our affinity for briyani than prayer!  Recently while I stayed in a pastor’s house to preach in his church for three days, I watched the time they spent discussing about the menu and the preparation of food, while they were nonchalant about praying for the revival during the meeting.

Why does the church not speak much about fasting?  Why are our Leaders lethargic in the area of fasting?  No wonder satan is dancing over our churches and Christian homes, because we have failed to fast and pray.  I am speaking to someone out there!

Don’t ignore this message! Don’t skip this devotion!  Start fasting and praying before the doctor tells you, ‘you have to be on strict diet for the rest of your life.’  Let such bomb shells not come over your life.  May be you say, ‘Bala, why do you scare us like this?’ I’ve got to, because none seem to care to preach strictly on this subject.’  Let me quote Psalm 141:5”Let the righteous strike me; It shall be a kindness. And let him rebuke me; It shall be as excellent oil; Let my head not refuse it.” I write this not to offend you but to make you amend your ways.

Check out my website under the folder ‘Bible Study’ on ways to fast and pray.  Fasting and praying makes you strong to stand against the wiles of the devil and also to stay close to God.  Does not matter, whether you are young or old, start fasting right away, fasting helps you to resist temptation and stay holy for God.

The book of Esther has just ten chapters but the blessings one can reap from them are amazing.  Hard, closed doors open up for queen Esther when she prostrates in front of God for three days; without food and water.  The king looks at her and says, Esther 5:3 “What do you wish, Queen Esther? What is your request? It shall be given to you --- up to half the kingdom!" Favor and good will surround you when you fast and pray!

Do you have an experience of being without food and water and prostrating before God? Not many, though.  I was able to scale through many hindrances and barriers in my ministry and I stand unscathed today only because of my severe fasting and prayer life.  I remember once on the third day of fasting, I got a severe muscle pull in my stomach very early in the morning, I had a whole day to go through, in order to complete my fasting successfully.  My husband wondered whether I would make it; though in miserable pain, I refused to break my fasting, I persevered and completed the fasting at 5 pm that evening.  I refuse to eat rich, heavy food while I am preaching in conventions and revival camps that would be held for more than one day.  I eat minimum, simple food and concentrate heavily only on the Word and prayer.  This helps me to spend more time with God.

Think of the words, ‘put a knife to your throat If you are a man given to appetite!’ God wants us to take this issue seriously!  If you are a person who cannot eat your meal without a piece of meat or chicken, then this message should speak to you today.  Go on a ‘vegetarian food only fast’ for a week and show God that you love Him more than food.  The first king of Israel, the handsome, tall king Saul did a horrendous thing during the last days of his life.  He disobeyed God and thereby lost his fellowship with God, hence he rushed to a witch for prophesy and ate the food offered by her(1 Sam 28:25), after which Saul died at the hands of his enemies.  Friends, do not sit with sinners to dine.  Solomon warned us in Proverbs 23:3 “Be not desirous of his dainties: for they are deceitful meat’.  Do you hear me?  Don’t tell me, ‘Bala, I was forced into the situation.’ Never say that! Be bold to politely stay away from such parties, let us pray like David prayed :Psalm 141:4 “Do not incline my heart to any evil thing, To practice wicked works With men who work iniquity; And do not let me eat of their delicacies.”

Stay away from food offered to idols as well, let me read Revelation 2:20 for you, “Nevertheless I have a few things against you, because you allow that woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophetess, to teach and seduce My servants to commit sexual immorality and eat things sacrificed to idols.”  The Lord is against us when we eat things offered to idols.  Stay away! I repeat, ‘And put a knife to your throat if you are a man given to appetite!’

May you hear His voice today as He says: Revelation 3:20 “Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me.”
