DIOTREPHES – who loves to be first..

3 John 1:9 “I have written something to the church, but Diotrephes, who likes to put himself first, does not acknowledge our authority…”

This Sunday, the Sunday Class kids memorized the below scripture and told me after the service , which they normally do: Proverbs 16: 18Pride goes before destruction, And a haughty spirit before stumbling.” However, when I meditated this scripture, I remembered the character ‘Diotrephes’ that I was reading during that time.

Let me talk about this Diotrephes and how we should not have his characteristics, if you do identify any traits of his character in you, I advise you to ask God to deliver you.

Pride was so strong in him that he refused what John wrote to the church and also  did not acknowledge his authority. This is an absolute Lucifer spirit, warning!  These kind of people can cause catastrophe in a group, team and church, caveat!  The most important thing is that he loved to be first! Did you see that?  Moreover he was speaking wicked words against the saints and not enough he did not receive the missionaries and did not allow others to do so as well.  Evil spirit!

In  Abide School that we run for the poor, I face  lot of problems with Christian students than with the gentiles.  (click link to view our Abide School:https://balasamson1.wixsite.com/abideschool) Even this morning, I had to handle a class 5 student who joined us from a village,(Christian girl with Bible name) I admitted her with lot of compassion but she turned out to be a girl with a big mouth.  One single student can create lot of disturbance when they have this ‘Diotrephes spirit in them.   Humble? We don’t hear of it or see it anymore in today’s world. Right? “Who are you to correct me?”, “Who do you think you are?” “I am a senior in the industry”; aren’t these familiar statements that we hear everyday right from Parliament to Kinder Garden? A little misunderstanding, then we are ready to throw in the towel and say, “I am not working for the youth team anymore, no body respects me here.” Am I speaking to someone out there? Friend, I can give a bunch of scriptures on being humble and then give you three points on it and finish it, but I want to delve into the subject differently, I want this devotion to make you pause and think. First, honestly analyze yourself! Ask yourself, ‘am I a proud person?’ Do I have this ‘Diotrephes spirit of disrespecting my elders? Now, pray: “Lord, speak to me and help me change.”

1 Peter 5:5 “….Yes, all of you be submissive to one another, and be clothed with humility, for God resists the proud, But gives grace to the humble."
