Proverbs 17:27”He who has knowledge spares his words, And a man of understanding is of a calm spirit.“

Sunil Gavaskar’s distasteful comment on Shimron Hetmyer hasn’t gone down well with fans on social media.  Gavaskar said that he was waiting to see if Hetmyer ‘delivers’ after his wife had ‘delivered’( his wife has recently delivered a baby).  This meant that Gavaskar was looking out for improvement in his game, the sarcasm and mockery behind the words upset people and he has been rudely rebuked.  You don’t have to use profuse words but just one wrong gesture, facial expression, look in the eyes, one single wrongly worded sentence, one emoji are enough to break a person.  Anybody listening?

Some times it is not the big quarrels that breaks a marriage or relationship but one single harsh, toxic word can completely bring down the ‘love castle’.  During my initial days of working in a multinational bank, I was working for the Vice President as his secretary, so following up with his huge group of top level officers who reported to the VP was my job.  I had to be tactful but at the same time get the work done too,  I remember following up on a particular job with the Asst VP( who is also a high level manager) through email, I copied the boss too. BAM, that was silly on me to have done it, I naively did it with the intention of keeping my boss posted; however, the Asst VP did not like this at all.  He was very annoyed and from that day to the day he moved to a different location, he did not speak with me, neither did he call me for his farewell.  Relationships be it at home, office, or with friends, got to be handled very.. very carefully like fragile glass. Pause before you say or do anything…..

On another occasion, we were traveling to a different city to conduct 3 days revival camp, we as a family were carrying huge luggage and we landed at my mom’s home, where we were staying, very tired; however, a group of people involved in the meeting were already waiting for us.  With an intention of refreshing before I meet them, I rushed to the wash room, but the ‘team’ were disappointed.  Therefore the expectations is huge out there, if you call yourself a Christian, the world wants more from us, without Jesus we can never achieve this or do this. I goofed many times but God expects us and also I would say demands that we be extra cautious while dealing with people, because we represent Jesus.

Friend, let your speech be ‘golden!’ Avoid offensive jibe, harsh language, coarse language, deceit, hurtful words, bitter words, boastful words and cunning words. Let your words be pleasant ! “Pleasant words are as an honeycomb, sweet to the soul, and health to the bones.” (Proverbs 16:24) It requires an endless supply of energy, a massive amount of patience and iron will to control our unbridled tongue in this world. Let’s do it anyways!
