Why are so afraid?

Mark 4:40 He said to his disciples, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?”(NIV Bible)

We have heard the above scripture preached umpteen times and this is a familiar subject; nevertheless, have we received the spiritual truth from this question of Jesus? Why are you so afraid? The answer is certainly no; because there is ‘fear’ lingering in the air! Are you there? Fear of losing the job, fear of relationship, fear of famine, fear of illness, fear of natural calamity, fear of accidents, fear of future and so on….it is endless. I want to take you all deep into the scripture today, please listen carefully.

Who was Jesus speaking to? His disciples.  He was not talking to strangers and was not rebuking strangers, he had reason to speak so.  The words ‘so afraid’ and ‘do you still have no faith’ caught my attention.  Friend it is one thing to be afraid and another to be ‘so afraid.’  Did you get that?  It is okay to have initial fear and get over it, but it is another to ‘fear terribly’ until the point of dropping.    In Mathew we read of this same incident in different words though, Jesus said, Mathew 8:26 He replied, “You of little faith, why are you so afraid?” Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm.”

Friends, you know what, I want you guys to be blessed with this message and live a supernatural life and not a mediocre one.  We belong to a big supernatural God who calmed the sea and wind.  Shout out praises for Him will you?  When I preached the message this morning in our church, I was thumping across the pulpit and almost jumping with joy.  How happy I am to preach about my Savior!  Friend, did you know what it took me to leave a multinational job as a mother of two kids and enter a tough Christian mission field?  Trust in Him.  Ah, I wish you get what I feel today!  If you want to walk out of a sinful business, unrighteous life and live a holy life, let not fear prevent you; let me persuade you today to walk INTO HIS HANDS.  Say Amen.  I stand as a living testimony for God!

Fear versus faith:

Now, back to the question why did Jesus say, ‘why are you so afraid?’  Read Mark 4:2”  He taught them many things..”  Note this, further He gave special teaching to His disciples, read this, “when he was alone with his own disciples, he explained everything.”(verse 34)  After all the teachings, seminars and conventions held by the sea shore on boat as a pulpit, now read verse 35 “That day when evening came, he said to his disciples, “Let us go over to the other side.” Observe the words, ‘THAT DAY’.  Are you listening? Which day? The day He had held the marathon convention when He explained and taught them everything.  Now the disciples were fresh after a great convention with the Messiah; Jesus expected ‘faith’.  Further He tells them, “Let us go over”, the Lord who personally took them over in the boat, would He not take care of them?    God expected some fruits out of His hard work and preaching?  He expected ‘faith’.  I repeat faith and not fear.  Fear is from the devil, faith comes from God.  Who do you belong to?  God is not pleased with people who fear when they encounter problems.  Look what happened to Zacharias, the holy priest, who doubted the words of the angel, he was muted for many days until faith arose in him.  Walk by faith and not by sight.

The Bible says not an ordinary storm but a great storm arose and the boat was filled with water.  Pretty scary situation! STILL Jesus expects faith.  Great was His expectation from His children in whom He had invested a lot.   We see here disciples who were just like the world and they seem to be terrified not just afraid and seem to be blurting out words out of fear.  ‘We are perishing’, ‘don’t you care’ are not words expected from the 12 who spent 24x7 with the Messiah. Friend, it is in the storm that we need to wriggle out our head from the water and keep praying.  After entering ministry, there were many, many times that we had to face severe trials regarding many things: children college admission, ministry expenses, sickness and much more, but only prayer had saved us.  Amen.  I have shared this experience earlier but let me say it again, it is awesome, it was the last day to pay the college admission fees for my daughter, my husband and I went on a complete fasting for 3 days, that is without anything, 3 days without food and water.  Friend, when the situation is tough, submit yourself also for hard prayer.  You cannot see glory swinging your legs in the swing.  Pray hard.  On the third day, after fasting, I went to work on my laptop as usual, I suddenly got a greeting from a gentleman whom I had met only once in a city, he wrote, ‘Hi sister, how are you?’  Suddenly during the conversation he asked, “I feel you are in urgent need of money, please let me know how much?” I said, ‘we are okay, if God is stirring your heart, you may send as led by God.’ He said I will do it right away and within ten minutes, I got the huge amount I was praying for my daughter.’  I called my daughter and showed her the entire conversation and witness the parting of the Red sea in our life.  Glory!  I can narrate many such miracles in our life.  When you venture out to trust God, then you can witness the EXTRAORDINARY.  Before I pass on to the next point, I want to say this, don’t expect to live out of prayers offered by others.  You kneel and pray hard.  Let me point out a scripture where Jesus prayed hard, (Luke 22:44)”And being in agony, he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground.” Observe when He was in agony, He did not say ‘I am in no mood to pray’ but ‘ He prayed more earnestly.’  Take this lesson in your life.

Jesus just directly spoke to the winds and commanded them ‘to be still’ and look what happened, ‘ they obeyed.’  Man, what power!  I want to talk about this authority a little more so that you understand that even you can have authority like Jesus when we live like Him.  What gave Jesus the power to rebuke the wind and sea? His intimacy with His Heavenly Father, read this, “The only begotten Son, who is in the bosom of the Father..” (John 1:18) The more, the more, the more, the more, the more you spend time with Jesus, the more you would start behaving like Him.  Like Father the child.  His anointing would brush off on you.  Most of the youngsters who were saved from my ministry, would also preach like me with power and boldness.   Authority comes from the confidence that you are His child, you have His protection and also His power.  The Bible  says that ‘we are partakers of His anointing..’ (Hebrews 3:14 For we have become partakers of Christ if we hold the beginning of our confidence steadfast to the end..)The ‘authority’ that I am talking about is not to ‘throw your weight around’ but surrendering and humbling yourself to Jesus who would give you His power to serve and live in a powerful way.  Friend, when people raise their voices and try to drown your godly principles and righteous way of living, you would not buckle down to pressure, but with authority preach the Gospel to rebels.  Friend, it’s not all about flaunting ones vocabulary, fancy church or swanky musical instruments or dishing out wisecracks but God’s power has to flow through the preaching and transform people. Amen.

Mark 4: 41 They were terrified and asked each other, “Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!”

Look, this fear that gripped the disciples now is ‘godly fear’!  We all need this.  They had witnessed something awesome right in front of them when the waves and the wind obeyed Jesus.  Imagine!  Hence they now feared His power.    You need to know and have a thorough deep knowledge of His power and what He is able to do.  Do you understand?  Expect the impossible from Him.  How can you get this? THROUGH HIS WORD!  It is not enough that you read my devotions everyday and be happy, dig deeper into the Bible yourself everyday.  Are you there? You are afraid, you are oppressed, you are negative in your thinking,  because you have failed to read His Word.  Sometimes God has a way of buttonholing us into a corner with no way out, so that we turn our focus on to Him, and we look above and not around.  Look what David says when he was in deep sorrow and pain:

•    Psalm 77: 10 Then I thought, “To this I will appeal:
    the years when the Most High stretched out his right hand.
•    11 I will remember the deeds of the LORD;
    yes, I will remember your miracles of long ago.
•    12 I will consider all your works
    and meditate on all your mighty deeds.”

We need to do likewise and meditate His power and have faith that He would do it for you too.  Say Amen. Enough of frolicking and dancing around the Bible, let us now take it and read it.

If we are faithful to God in little things, we shall gain experience and strength that will be helpful to us in the more serious trials of life. "Hudson Taylor

Finally a word, if we need to live with power, faith and anointing, we need to follow His commandments scrupulously,

•    Proverbs 7: 2 “Keep my commands and you will live;
    guard my teachings as the apple of your eye.
•   3 Bind them on your fingers; write them on the tablet of your heart.
