First born
devotion by Sis. Bala Samson

1 Chronicles 5: 1”Now the sons of Reuben the firstborn of Israel (for he was the firstborn, but because he defiled his father's bed, his birthright was given to the sons of Joseph the son of Israel; so that he is not enrolled in the genealogy according to the birthright.

Here is a very sad story of Reuben who is first born of Israel, who made his mom very happy, because she got a son before her sister Rebecca who was loved more by her husband: Genesis 29:32 Leah became pregnant and gave birth to a son. She named him Reuben, for she said, "It is because the LORD has seen my misery. Surely my husband will love me now." BUT, Reuben sabotaged everything by his careless, reckless and unstable life!  This is not new though, many start great but end up miserable like Reuben.

If Reuben had lived right before God, as first-born he had an inheritance superior to his brethren,  he would have been leader over all of Israel and received double portion than any of his brothers but alas he got nothing. Just nothing. Alas!  Listen to me today, I have an important message, many of us think Christianity is all about good job, marriage, property , prosperity and blessings..no…no…there is more to it friend.  We as children of God have an inheritance that belongs to us that we should never ever forfeit , read: Colossians 3:24 ‘knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ.’

I spoke to a girl who had converted to Christianity, she had problems in her legs which is yet to be healed, but she told me today on her birthday, “ I am glad today that I am the child of God, able to understand the depth of God’s Word and also I have the assurance of going to heaven after my death.”  These are the riches that one should be proud of as child of God and not lose it like Reuben.  Let me wrap up this devotion with the words of Apostle Paul: “If our hope in Christ is for this life alone, we are to be pitied more than all men.” (1 Corinthians 15:19)
