Valley of Eshcol

Numbers 13: 23”Then they came to the valley of Eshcol and from there cut down a branch with a single cluster of grapes; and they carried it on a pole between two men, with some of the pomegranates and the figs.”

The meaning of ESHCOL is bunch of grapes! I address this message especially to ‘leaders’ of any capacity, may be team leader, prayer cell group leader, CEO, Businessman, Project Manager, Supervisor, father; whoever, let this message speak with you.  Let me just give you a short synopsis of the above scripture, in order to survey the land of Canaan , the promised land of God, as per instructions from the Lord, Moses sent 12 men of each tribe of Israel to spy the land before they march into it.  Remember, they did not go into that land as guests but they were sent as ‘spies’, the twelve men were not ordinary people but “they were every one a leader among them." Did you hear that? Leaders!

Lot of caution was taken while the 12 men were selected from their respective tribes, because the job was highly sensitive and dangerous because they were going to enter the enemy territory which they were about to capture.  They had to be sharp, shrewd, strong with grit and guts, they started off well, though.  They saw the cluster of grapes which was not common but too big and juicy to describe, they had to carry a bunch of grapes from just one branch, tied to a pole and carried by two men, this is just enough to explain the fertility and goodness of that land. I guess they must have had a feast on the fruits too, they carried it back to Moses as a proof of that rich land.   Did not the Lord say: “I will bring you into the land which I swore to give to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; and I will give it to you as a heritage: I am the LORD."(Exodus 6:8)

However, when ten of the 12 spies saw the size of the men who were living there and the big cities with great walls, they got discouraged, scared and afraid.  How soon people of God forget that they serve an Almighty God who said, ‘Heaven is my throne and earth is my footstool’, He is so colossal, powerful and magnificent; yet, these men who were leaders refused to take God’s words seriously.  Why did the men not think of the divine protection that they received during their 40 days stay in the land of Canaan, where they dwelt in the midst of giants? They came back safe after 40 days carrying huge cluster of grapes, why were they ungrateful and not believe God? Christians today are no better, just believe God!
