One up

Philippians 2:3”Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility of mind regard one another as more important than yourselves..”

Let’s read this together, “Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit “, I tell you this scripture should hit us like thunderbolt, do you  hear me?  We’re surrounded by people who would like to be ONE UP on everybody else, they would rather stretch beyond their means and splurge their money on extravagance rather than settle for simple life: my daughter studies in an international school where there is a swimming pool (crazy), my son goes to Karate class, music class, math class…blah….blah…after school, this is not local saree but bought from the famous boutique (oh!) they would force and push their children into engineering college and Medical college just to be One Up over others .

This kind of bragging is not heard only outside the church but it is more inside the church too: the pastor looks at a church who has multiple services and starts an extra service in his church too, just to tell his co-pastors, “ we have started an extra service too” – the Bible tells us “Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit.” There was another village pastor who started English service in his church (even though there very few who understand English) just to be One Up over the other churches around - Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit! This particular pastor had given his church away to some other group who preach wrong doctrines, though he was doing very well but empty conceit was the cause of his downfall.  I had preached in that church several times, I write this portion with pain.

We got to imbibe this scripture into the hearts of our children and counsel them to live their life for God and not for others.  There are other good-Bible-reading Christians who say, “ I will get a good job and show people that God is on my side”; hey friend, that is empty conceit and proud talk, God cannot bless such proud hearts.  Warning!  The verse goes on to say, read with me, “regard one another as more important than yourselves..” Wow!

You don’t have to buy that expensive dress to be ‘ONE UP’ over your colleagues, let your etiquette and conduct be One up on them.  God bless you!
