No Confidence in the Flesh

Philippians 3:3: “…..put no confidence in the flesh…”

Read the entire message, dont skip details......I would like to open this devotion by narrating an incident that stayed in my mind, this happened when we were preparing for an all-night prayer in Chennai.  One particular young boy who was preparing for the night prayer said, ‘ I have prayed for 10 hours today and I am sure the anointing would be heavy today when I worship and minister but it turned out to be opposite that night – it was bland and insipid. This guy was planning for a performance, whereas anointing comes through the presence of God where FLESH IS PUT TO DEATH.  Amen.  This youngster would brag a lot about memorizing scriptures and also bring out Bible verses each time he talks; everything is alright and wonderful but there would be pride and self-achievement coated in all his spiritual activities.

Don’t take me wrong after reading the first para and ask me, ”so, do you mean to say we should not pray long and memorize scriptures?”  Do it through dependence on JESUS! Don’t trust in yourself! Don’t trust in your ability to fast, don’t trust in your ability to read the Bible, don’t trust in your talents, your skills, your labor for God, don’t trust in your connection with spiritual people, don’t trust in your charitable activities, don’t trust in your zeal for God and get proud; spiritual pride can seep in and destroy your intimacy with God.  When you put your trust in all the above, then you would think, God is entitled to bless you because of all your deeds, this is Pharisee attitude, God looks for a broken and contrite spirit, are you listening? Read verse 9 :

•    not having a righteousness of my own derived from the Law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which comes from God on the basis of faith..

Does this mean I should not fast, pray and be reckless in my walk with God?  NEVER.  Even if there is an ‘iota’ of flesh involved in our worship and prayer, God would smell it, so we got to be extremely careful, as you walk intimately with Him, you would know His heart.  Are you listening?  God will reveal to you what pleases Him and what displeases Him.  Do not look down on nonbelievers and feel ‘you are on a higher level’, God would spot your pride, let us be humble and be good models for those who do not know Jesus.

Let me close with something really cute, there were days when I would be spending time in cooking or cleaning in Abide School, because of lack of workers and would feel, ‘I have not spent much time with God now how do I preach today?  But those were the days I would get BONUS ANOITING!  God knows our heart!
