Eighty priests

2 Chronicles 26:17 “Then Azariah the priest entered after him and with him eighty priests of the LORD, valiant men. They opposed Uzziah the king…”

I have watched some people who are extremely rebellious and turn away from God despite hearing advices, sermons and counseling enormous number of times.  One of my student has been with me for a very long time, I had some times preached to few of them exclusively for long hours and she was one among them, I had sacrificed my time with my family and invested in the lives of few students; however, when they betray, the pain is unbearable.  One day I got to read the diary (given by me) of that student and I found the name of her boyfriend written there like mantra many times and also many other rubbish.  My heart broke.  Well, this is not something unusual in the modern era we live in today; nevertheless, when someone you love betray you it is horrendous, she left us eventually.

Listen, in the above scripture, king Uzziah became powerful, famous and rich not on his own but it was God who helped him.  The Bible says, “God helped king Uzziah against the Philistines……The Ammonites also gave tribute to Uzziah, and his fame extended to the border of Egypt, for he became very strong.” Now Uzziah became puffed up because of success and he dared to disobey God by entering the temple of God to burn incense which only the priests are allowed to do.  Now what struck me was 80 priests joined Azariah the priest to stop king Uzziah from doing something so catastrophic but instead of listening to the priests – huge crowd of 80 priests for one king - anointed by God, the Bible says in verse 19 that Uzziah was ‘angry with the priests’, now watch this – “while he was enraged with the priests, the leprosy broke out on his forehead before the priests in the house of the LORD, beside the altar of incense.”  Did you see the humiliation and punishment?  Instant leprosy was punishment for his daring disobedience concerning the laws of God.  The most erie information is that verse 21 says  “King Uzziah was a leper to the day of his death; and he lived in a separate house, being a leper, for he was cut off from the house of the LORD.” The lesson we learn today:

  • the 81  priests were sent by God
  • you cannot ignore and treat your priests disrespectfully and snootily and get away with it.  Caveat!

Do not take God’s servants for granted who are sent to you to rebuke, correct, instruct, guide, monitor and preach to you but instead humbly listen to their advises and change your life.
